Are Online Poker Rooms Rigged?

1 Comment 04 December 2009

Just a couple of weeks ago, the FBI released their report on online poker cheating reportedly causing people to lose a lot of money. It is considered to be a scam and illegal, and the bureau is investigating the matter closely to determine the source. Since that report was released, a lot of stirs in the world of online poker are popping up like mushrooms. People are stating openly how online poker rooms are rigged and that there are no chances winning for other poker players because the game is imbalanced.

I’m going to try to be as neutral as possible to the issue and state only what I have experienced with online poker so far, but there are several misconceptions about the report that need some clarifying. First of all, the FBI clearly stated that the party suspected of cheating is actually players, not online poker room managements. They are suspecting several players using more than one computer to logon as different users and exploit the imbalanced situation at the poker table. The poker room managements are in fact doing everything they can and installing detection algorithms to prevent such practice from happening.

Second of all, you should know that online poker rooms make their profit from rakes — a portion of the pot taken as fees — which mean they need people to play in order to produce higher profits. The fact that there are cheaters ruining their reputations is devastating for their business. Still think the game is rigged?
